Silhouette Collage

Materials:
- white drawing paper
- black construction paper
- scissors
- glue
- overhead projector
- magazines

This was a fairly easy lesson to review collage and introduce the terms profile and silhouette. It also is a good identity project or a lesson to do in the beginning of the year when you are learning the characters of your students.

I created the silhouettes the old school way by having the students stand in front of an overhead projector light and tracing their outline. Another simpler way would be to take a photograph and print it out to the scale you'd like them to make their collage. The students could then cut out their profiles and trace the outline onto a piece of paper. I think the students like standing in front of a light though and casting a shadow. They simply filled in their profile with images that correlate with their personality, cut off any extra that was hanging off the edges and then mounted their collage onto black paper. You need a decent collection of magazines for this project, though... or you may end up with students not being able to find any relevant clippings OR have an entire collage of dirt bikes.
